Presents New Works by Tim Andrews and Joel Hilgenberg

Tim Andrews’ recent works are drawings based on famous sculptures he saw while in Italy and Paris in the spring of 2014. He was awestruck by these masterworks and compelled to make these drawings in honor of them. They are mixed media on paper using charcoal, gesso, some acrylic paint and metal leaf. The gold leaf in these works relates to the paintings of the era as well as objects he saw on the trip. Andrews went to Europe to be inspired by the great painters and was, but was awestruck by the sculptures. These are in many ways a departure from what he has done in the past but also fit in that in many ways they are simply portraits.

For Joel Hilgenberg the idea of storytelling is a huge part of his process in the making of this work. The story, or the notion of the story is what drives the conversation he’s having with the medium during the act of making. Literature and poetry then play a huge role. He became drawn to this quote about the poet Frank Stanford’s work and it was this quote that began this series: "These are not stories in the contemporary sense, but tales spun out of the mystical and the ordinary, a history of men sizing up other men and bottles being passed around a campfire. ...If death figures here, there is also the dichotomy of images honing in on an inevitable end and a language that is enormously, relentlessly alive"--Silvia Curbelo. This is the theme and momentum of Hilgenberg’s recent work.
